Welcome! The Canadian Mountain Running Association is happy to welcome you to our website. Our goals are to create a highly competitive national team program, and to develop the sport by cultivating relationships at the recreational level with trail race series across the nation.
We are currently seeking major corporate sponsorship to support our National Team program and increase the level of performance of Canadian teams at the World Mountain Running Championships. The International Association of Athletic Federations (IAAF) is a Patron of the World Mountain Running Association (WMRA), to whom it delegates the control of our branch of athletics. The CMRA is similarly patronized by Athletics Canada, without financial support.
The Canadian Mountain Running Association is a relatively new organisation on the Canadian running scene. The Association was developed, in part, to allow Canadian Mountain Runners the opportunity to compete with their peers on the international stage at the World Mountain Running Trophy. With the help of Angie Driscoll along with Mike Thackray and his team at Thackray Burgess the legal hurdles of incorporation were cleared early in 2001 and the Canadian Mountain and Trail Running Association came into being.
With the association papers in our back pocket we were then free to embark upon the quest to select interested and talented runners to make the journey to Arta Terme, Italy for the 2001 edition of the World Mountain Running Trophy. As we had little time to organize a separate Canadian Mountain Running Championship the decision was made to hold the championship in conjunction with the Canmore Challenge Trail Races on August 4, 2001. At the conclusion of the event a number of the top performing athletes were approached to participate in the Canadian Team at the 2001 World Mountain Running Trophy.
Since then, the CMRA has sent teams to the World Mountain Running Championships in both ascent and ascent/descent years. Inspired by the recent success of American and Kiwi programs, the CMRA hopes to embark on a new era of Canadian mountain running, where corporate sponsorship and government investment will attract Canada's top athletes to our sport.
